EHV Vaccine Amnesty Spring 2026

HNVG are delighted to announce that we will be launching a EHV vaccine amnesty on 1st February 2026, running until 30th June 2026. If your horse mixes with others – whether that is in competition, racing or riding club rallies please contact our office to take advantage of this amazing opportunity! This is our first EHV amnesty in 5 years, so make the most of it! The initial course for EHV vaccination in non-pregnant horses is 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart (followed by 6 monthly boosters), and this amnesty will give you a free* 2nd vaccination.

*Terms and Conditions apply

What is Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) and why does it matter?

EHV-1 and 4 most commonly cause respiratory disease in horses (high temperature, nasal discharge). Both can cause abortion in pregnant mares, for which vaccination is also recommended (at 5,7,9 months of pregnancy). EHV -1 can also cause severe neurological symptoms (such as the catastrophic outbreak on the Sunshine Jumping tour in 2021)

In a similar way to the cold sore virus in humans, once a horse has been exposed to the EHV virus it will never clear the infection but instead become latently infected, with the virus able to reappear in times of stress (resulting in clinical disease and/or shedding of the virus).

Subclinical EHV infection is seen as significant cause of poor performance and a recent paper measuring EHV in the air in the stables at FEI competitions (amongst HEALTHY horses) detected EHV-1 in 70% of samples and EHV-4 in 46%!
