Fibre-optic endoscopy allows us to examine the upper airway, nasal passages, guttural pouches, sinuses, oesophagus, stomach and bladder under standing sedation. Some endoscopy procedures examinations can be carried out using a battery-powered endoscope (e.g. upper respiratory tract), but others, such as gastroscopy, use a larger video unit which requires mains power. When booking an endoscopic examination please let us know whether or not mains power is available at your yard so we can make the necessary arrangements to meet your needs.
Mucus and blood in the upper airway can indicate inflammation or infection of the airways and is graded to reflect severity. Tracheal wash and bronchoalveolar lavage samples can be taken for characterisation of the problem (bacterial infection vs. allergic airway disease) and for culture and sensitivity in the case of bacterial infections.
