Equine Laser Surgery

Our surgical laser team, headed by Tom Righton, handles an ever-growing caseload of laser sarcoid removal with outstanding results. Many sarcoids can be removed under standing sedation with local anaesthetic, although horses with multiple sarcoids or those which are difficult to access may require a short general anaesthetic. The surgical laser can also be used to remove melanomas and other growths – please contact us if you have any questions, or would like to discuss sarcoids or melanomas concerning your horse.

Therapeutic Laser

Our Class IV lasers can also be used for therapy as well as for surgery. Laser therapy has a wide range of applications through its photobiomodulatory effects on cells and tissues. Applications for laser therapy include:-

> Pain relief – laser therapy slows sensory nerve conduction and so reduces the perception of pain. Acute and chronic conditions both respond well to laser treatment, and the equine vets can often be found lasering the latest injuries in the clinic.

> Increased circulation – improved blood supply to the treated area, speeding up wound healing and resolution of inflammation.

> Enhanced wound healing – wounds treated with lasers contract (shrink) faster and re-epithelialise (grow new skin) faster than untreated wounds.
