Spring is the ideal time for colt castrations, and last week, our Equine Vet, Sam, had a very special patient of her own — her colt Juniper.
Juniper, by the renowned stallion Diarado and out of Sam’s own homebred 4* event mare Holly, underwent his castration last week. He was the perfect patient throughout the procedure and is making a fantastic recovery, although Sam jokes that he has only nearly forgiven her for it!
Springtime offers the perfect conditions for castrating colts:
✅ Milder weather reduces the risk of post-operative swelling and infection.
✅ Turnout is easier, allowing colts to move and recover more naturally.
✅ Less fly activity compared to summer months.
Castration is a routine procedure, but it’s important to have it done by an experienced veterinary team to ensure the safest outcome for your youngster. Whether you have a future competition star, a much-loved family pony, or anything in between, we are here to provide the very best care.
