Sally is ancient enough to remember the first, proper James Herriot series. Whether or not she’d read the books first is lost in the mists of time, but the appeal of spending time outdoors solving bizarre problems and making a (positive) difference to the lives of animals and their owners was strong. Having been told by the careers advisor that veterinary medicine was ‘too difficult, you won’t get in,’ Sally took the long way around and completed a degree in Zoology at Liverpool before studying Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge. She was asked to leave Cambridge in 2007 (having successfully graduated) and went straight into equine practice, working for practices in Lambourn and Suffolk before joining HNVG in 2010. In January 2022, Sally became a Senior Vet in the Equine Team.
Like all the Equine team, Sally’s caseload is quite varied. She has particular interests in farriery, internal medicine, behaviour and pain management. In 2018 she was awarded the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine), taking the viva exam in Liverpool on the way to the Petplan Vet of the Year awards evening in Birmingham – a somewhat stressful piece of scheduling! Sally is an accredited Racecourse Veterinary Surgeon and a licenced Riding Establishment Inspector, and sits on the National Equine Welfare Council’s Equine Veterinary Subcommittee
Recognising the close bond that we all have with our animals, Sally’s aim is to leave each visit having helped her client understand what is happening with their horse, and with, if not a road map, at least a Plan A and sometimes a Plan B as well.
In her spare time, Sally is a real live human being. She is owned by a Kooikjerhonde, a Labrador and a ride & drive pony, who sometimes let her spend some time gardening or cooking.
